Teagasc are seeking to appoint a highly qualified and enthusiastic researcher to develop and lead a grassland research programme in beef production. The successful candidate’s research programme will have particular emphasis on developing profitable and sustainable grass-based systems of beef production and on investigating the factors affecting animal performance at pasture. The research will seek to optimise grass production and utilization in beef systems.

Grange is part of the Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Centre in Teagasc and has extensive facilities for field and laboratory research. Teagasc has an international reputation for researching and developing grass-based systems of livestock production and this candidate will work with a dynamic team of Teagasc researchers and specialists across Teagasc’s Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Programme at Grange, Moorepark and Athenry.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Develop, lead and implement a grazing research programme to improve the sustainability of Irish grass-based ruminant production systems.

Design and manage grassland (grass, grass/clover and other species mixtures) experiments, perform statistical analysis of experimental data and publish the resulting data.

Manage staff and resources assigned to the research programme.

Identify opportunities for cutting-edge research to address key knowledge gaps in grazing research.

Attract external funding with the objective of developing critical mass in the area, by building a dynamic team of post-doctoral researchers(s) and post-graduate student(s). 

Develop and maintain active collaboration with the relevant national and international research communities.

Supervise, in conjunction with university partners, postgraduate students to Masters and PhD level.

Interpret and publish research results in the scientific and popular press, at conferences (nationally and internationally) and to stakeholders.

Liaise and build a strong dynamic relationship with Teagasc Knowledge Transfer specialists/advisors and key stakeholders in the agri-food industry.
