The animal Consortium is seeking an Associate Editor-in-Chief for animal.

animal is one of the three scientific journals jointly owned by a Consortium comprised of the British Society of Animal Science (BSAS), the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP) and the Institut National de Recherche pour l’Agriculture, l’Alimentation et l’Environnement (INRAE). In 2024, the Institute of Agrifood and Technology Research under the Regional Government of Catalonia (IRTA, Spain) and Agroscope (Switzerland) have become associated parties of the Consortium. All articles in the animal Consortium journals are published as Gold Open Access by Elsevier on behalf of the Consortium.

animal publishes the best, innovative and cutting-edge science that relates to farmed or managed animals, and that is relevant to whole animal outcomes, and/or to animal management practices. Papers can be accepted from all species if they are in, or contribute knowledge to, farmed and managed animal systems (e.g., cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, horses, rabbits, fish). The journal publishes monthly issues.

Role of the Associate Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief and the Associate Editor-in-Chief are responsible for the development of the journal within the framework of the strategy and budget defined by the Management Board.

More specifically, the Associate Editor-in-Chief (AEiC)
1.    is a member of the Editorial Board,
2.    assists the Editor-in-Chief in all operations deriving from decisions made by the Management Board to enhance the published contents and promote the journal,
3.    works in close relationship with the Editor-in-Chief to develop the editorial policy, update the guide for authors, manage the Editorial Board and solve ethical issues, and
4.    replaces the Editor-in-Chief to ensure the coordination, preparation and publication of the journal, in coordination with the publisher when she is on vacation or unavailable, and vice versa.

Separation of roles
The main activities of the AEiC are focused on
-     the following sections: Nutrition – Ruminants, Health Management, Livestock Farming Systems and Insects as Livestock, with the
o    filtering of new submissions, including unsolicited reviews
o    recruitment and follow-up of editors
o    assistance to editors during the peer-review process
N.B. The Editor-in-Chief is in charge of the same activities for the other sections.
-    the extraction and statistical analysis of data from Editorial Manager (3-4 weeks/year)
-    any other activities as determined by the Management Board

Expectations
Candidates are expected to be internationally recognised scientists in animal science, if possible in Livestock farming systems and ruminants, to have experience in writing scientific articles and editorial duties, to possess good communication skills, a good command of written and oral English, and to take initiative while being a team player.
Candidates are also expected to work 2.5 days /week for the journal on a regular basis. About 10 days are required for attendance to animal Consortium meetings.
The Associate Editor-in-Chief will receive an honorarium for his/her activities.
