The University of Reading has an international reputation for integrative, interdisciplinary research across the agri-food chain, as well as providing a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree opportunities, consistently ranking in the global top 10 of the QS World University Rankings for Agriculture and Forestry. The School of Agriculture, Policy and Development (SAPD) offers 7 BSc programmes (450 undergraduates) and 10 taught MSc programmes (100 students), and mentors about 120 PhD students annually. The Department of Animal Sciences (DAS) within SAPD has research grants valued at about £1.8 million/year. DAS comprises some 30 staff covering a range of disciplines, working closely with the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences and other Departments, as well as universities/institutes globally. Expertise includes animal nutrition/physiology, food chain nutrition and the environmental impact of livestock production. DAS has extensive research facilities, including the Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR) supporting research in cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry. Facilities include large animal calorimeters to evaluate energy balance and methane emissions, facilities to individually feed and monitor cattle (up to 200) and sheep for nutrition studies, controlled environment rooms, and access to larger groups of dairy cows for studies within the University’s commercial 560-head herd of high yielding Holsteins.
