Dublin Declaration of Scientists on the Societal Role of Livestock

The role of meat production and meat consumption was in the spotlight as international experts recently gathered in Dublin to discuss the importance of meat to society.

The two-day summit on 'The Societal Role of Meat - What the Science Says' was hosted by Teagasc and featured a number of world-leading experts including speakers from United States, New Zealand, Ireland and Zimbabwe.

The summit examined the importance and scale of meat production in different regions of the world and explored, in-depth, key societal issues around livestock farming and the role of meat in a healthy human diet. Speakers also addressed how farming and meat consumption plays a significant role in economics and culture globally, as well as tackling the ongoing debate around the impact of meat production and consumption on environmental sustainability.

As a body of scientists, BSAS stands behind the appropriate use of science in support of public policy. We have publicly supported the role of accurate scientific quantification in the analysis of the dietary impact of meat consumption, for example, and are keen to ensure that research findings are used in a balanced and appropriate manner and not misused to support a particular viewpoint. Please do consider supporting this declaration.
