Claire Reigate named winner of the Steve Bishop Net Zero Award
The Steve Bishop Net Zero Award Committee is pleased to announce that Claire Reigate has been named the winner of the 2023 Net Zero Award. Claire's proposal, which focused on examining the relationship between parasite burden and sustainability, was deemed the most impressive by the committee.
The Steve Bishop Net Zero Award is a short project award that recognises exceptional research that aligns with the theme of net-zero and has the potential to contribute to a sustainable future. Claire's proposal stood out from the rest due to its unique perspective and collaborations.
Claire's project aims to examine the relationship between parasite burden and sustainability, specifically in the context of livestock production. By collaborating with Rothamsted, Claire was able to utilise their cutting-edge technology and expertise to investigate the potential environmental and economic impacts of different strategies for controlling parasites.
David Wilde, BSAS Trustee and judging panel lead said "We were impressed by Claire's innovative approach to the Net Zero Award theme.” Wilde continues "Her research could have a significant impact on livestock production and contribute to a more sustainable future. We also appreciated her collaboration with Rothamsted, which demonstrates a commitment to working together to address the challenges of sustainability."
Claire Reigate is a PhD student in the Department of Animal Sciences at the Aberystwyth University. She will receive a funding prize and the opportunity to present her research at the British Society of Animal Science Annual Conference in April next year in Belfast.
"I am deeply honoured to receive the Steve Bishop Net Zero Award, and grateful for the exciting opportunity to collaborate with researchers at Rothamsted’s global research facility, North Wyke," said Claire.
Award sponsor Innovate UK KTN's Jo Gosling comments "This award is a testament to the importance of collaborative research in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our planet. Congratulations to Claire on her interdisciplinary approach, which combined expertise in ecology, parasitology, and sustainability in her work”.
The Steve Bishop Net Zero Award was established in memory of Steve Bishop, an advocate for sustainability and founder of the Net Zero Summit. The award recognises individuals who are making significant contributions to the field of sustainability and who have the potential to inspire others to take action.
