Developing talent sessions
26 Apr 2021
As a charity that champions the animal science talent of the future, we were excited to be able to make this year’s virtual conference a celebration of our early career scientists, with a dedicated early careers programme, which included offering an enriching series of workshops and sessions, that gave our fledgling scientists the tools they need to enhance their career prospects, and gain confidence in their professional abilities.
The quality of presentations in the developing talent sessions were particularly impressive, which made the judging for oral presentations particularly tough. The Chairs did a wonderful job of managing the sessions, and the speakers adapted brilliantly to the new virtual format, performing particularly well in the Q&A. With regards to the posters, the panel were pleased to see how well the presenters dealt with explaining their work in a clear and concise manner within the 3-minute timeframe.
The ‘Verbal Communication and Public Engagement Skills’ session with BBC Presenter Nicola Weir, was extremely well received and proved with be a really valuable and unique experience for attendees, with Nicola giving them some really useful tips and tricks on how to manage yourself in an interview and how to prepare. She also gave an insight from the interviewer’s perspective on what they are looking for from the discussion too. Along with Elizabeth Magowan, she provided detailed and useful feedback to each person in the session, which was a real confidence boost for attendees. It was great to see so many people interacting with the developing talent, and since the conference there has been a lot of interest from delegates looking to join both the early career and soon to be launched undergraduate councils.
‘BSAS and AHDB were pleased to be working together to deliver the early careers programme and look forward to being able to develop it further in the future.’ Kim Matthews (Head of Animal Breeding & Product Quality, AHDB)
