Get to grips with statistics at BSAS workshop

Scientists who struggle to decipher their data and need a hand getting to grips with statistics are being offered the chance to develop their skills thanks to the BSAS annual workshop this August.

The Society’s annual two-day R and Statistics Workshop aims to improve your confidence with statistics and data through a practical techniques course designed to make the subject clear and straightforward.

Held at the University of Cumbria on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 August 2019, the workshop will refresh attendees knowledge of statistics and experimental design, whilst also teaching them about statistical software and programming language R.

Hosted by the BSAS Early Career Council - who provide a diverse and supportive networking platform to members from degree level through to Post-Doc - the workshop is aimed primarily at postgraduate students studying any animal science related topic.
It is also open to BSAS members, as well as non-members who want to learn R or revise their skills. So whether you are new to the software or need some help to brush-up on how to use it, the workshop aims to refresh your knowledge and enhance your skills.
Under the guidance of tutor Dr Davina Hill - who teaches Research Methods and Data Analysis modules to undergraduates at the University of Cumbria - attendees will learn a range of subjects, including writing scripts to examine and process data, producing graphics, and how to use statistical tests in their work.

The course programme includes:

-  Getting started with 'R'
-  Comparing groups
-  Data processing in 'R'
-  Regression analysis
-  Distributions and correlations

Students/early career researchers can attend the workshop for a discounted rate of £90, which includes an evening meal and one night’s accommodation.

The cost for BSAS members the workshop costs £150 and for non-BSAS members £250, plus the cost of accommodation and evening meal.
